Acne isn’t only for teens…
Adult acne is on the rise, especially in women. More than 17 millions adults are diagnosed with acne in the US; 50% being women, and 25% in men.
Adult acne is more persistent than teen acne and scaring can be more prevalent due to skin losing its ability to repair, because of aging. Acne can also be triggered by hormones at any stage of our lifespan, and the most common factor in adult acne is chronic stress. Chronic and continual stress increase hormone levels which can lead to an increase in oil production.
Recent studies from the American Dermatologist Association have found out the following facts:
- 60 million Americans have active acne
- 54% women 25 years and over have acne
- Only 11% of acne sufferers seek help
- Acne can effect anyone regardless of age, gender or race
Acne can be an often embarrassing for both adults teens, and should be treated properly. Simply buying anti-acne skin care at your local drugstore isn’t enough. Your skin should be evaluated by a professional aesthetician or dermatologist to see what skin care regimen is best for you. Not all acne is the same, which is a common misconception.
Most side effects with adult acne are: redness or inflammation, acne along jaw line, chin and neck vs. entire face, and a change in pigmentation (cortisol factor).
